Join us as we delve into the story behind Altus's origins, a tale intertwined with the mighty forces of nature and the indomitable spirit of its people.
Altus's history begins in the late 19th century when courageous pioneers ventured into the vast Oklahoma Territory in search of new opportunities. Frazer, named after a prominent railway executive, emerged as a bustling community along the Texas and Pacific Railway. However, the determined settlers faced a formidable challenge when a devastating flood virtually washed away Frazer, leaving its future uncertain.

Undeterred, the resilient residents decided to rebuild their community on "higher ground," emphasizing their commitment to rise above adversity and create a prosperous future. This choice symbolized the unwavering spirit of Altus's people and their determination to forge ahead.
Altus continued to thrive, fueled by the perseverance and hard work of its residents. In the early 1940s, Altus experienced another significant milestone with the establishment of Altus Army Airfield, later transformed into Altus Air Force Base. This marked a new chapter in Altus's history as the city became an essential training center for the United States Air Force, solidifying its role in national defense.
